UNLEASH YOUR diverse and feminist BOOKWORM.

Project Overview

Enter o*books, a safe haven tucked in Vienna's Nordbahnviertel focusing on feminist and queer literature. Dissatisfied with a generic online shop platform that failed to capture their brand's unique spirit, o*books yearned for a digital presence that would authentically represent their business and philosophy. The task at hand wasn't simply about selling books; it was about creating a welcoming space for the community, hosting events, promoting book subscriptions, and shining a light on their carefully curated book recommendations.

A dark grey Macbook Pro is standing on a light green sofa. The Macbook is opened and the website of o*books is visible on the screen. It is showing the page with all their book recommendations. The book covers visible are Unertrunken (a light background with an illustration of three female silhouettes in black), Dschinns (dark purple background with title written in black on top) and Stadt. Land. Dorf. (light green background with a picture of a muddy street on it. The title is written in a yellow font, The word "Stadt" is striked through).

The Challenge

The book retail market, notoriously competitive and increasingly dominated by giants like "The big A", can often overshadow smaller, independent establishments. This was precisely the challenge for o*books, which stands tall not just as a bookstore, but as a beacon for the feminist, queer, and FLINTA communities. Creating awareness and inspiring support for independent, women-owned businesses like o*books was key, as was demonstrating the profound impact they have on their community.

What We Did

Leveraging the existing branding designed by Andrea Haselmayr, we immediately applied this beautiful aesthetic to the website design. Striking photography by Lukas Lorenz brought to life the distinctive and vibrant personalities of Bianca Braunshofer and Katja Fetty, the passionate owners of o*books. The brand's trademark asterisk, a symbol of inclusivity, was incorporated throughout the website as a unique interactive feature.

Furthermore, we introduced a checkout service to facilitate the sale of book subscriptions and event tickets. Understanding the importance of personal consultations in the book retail space, we placed special emphasis on encouraging visitors to reach out. Finally, we equipped o*books with social media post templates, designed in line with their digital strategy and visual language, for announcing events or sharing book recommendations.

What emerged was a website that is undeniably o*books – engaging, fun, and most importantly, inclusive. The digital platform not only adheres to accessibility standards but also carefully crafts language to reflect the brand's dedication to accepting and acknowledging all genders, abilities, ethnicities, and ages. The ability for o*books to manage their events and products independently leads to long-term cost and time efficiency. Best of all, this unique, heart-filled website garners plenty of compliments, affirming the ethos of o*books and its commitment to creating an inclusive world one book at a time.
